La Salle d’Attente | Expressionist Lighting

Looking through my previous projects I noticed that the way in which we lit our short film ‘La Salle d’Attente’ was similar to the lighting conventions of the German Expressionist movement. At first, I had dubbed it a homage to the genre French New Wave however, after researching into expressionism; the film has more expressionist qualities and themes in it than it has French New Wave conventions. ¬†The high contrast lighting that we used really brought out the shadows in the short film. In addition, the subject matter was on life after death, an unanswered topic in the history of mankind. The soundtrack we used I feel carried some conventions of fantasy/ horror. It’s creepy and slow it makes you concentrate as you don’t know what’s happening, or what the narrative is about.
